Beginning on August 20, students at Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, Michigan will be receiving 3,000 laptops with WiMax cards in them.
At NMU, approximately two-thirds of the student population lives off campus, but they no longer will have to worry about where they are going to get that Internet connection that will allow them to do their homework. In an article on the NMU website, they state “Northern Michigan University deployed one of the largest active WiMAX networks in the country on the 10th anniversary of its campus-wide notebook computer program.” Students at NMU can access this WiMax network from anywhere, nearly 100% coverage, in Marquette for no additional cost.
NMU is one of the first university’s in the country to implement a wide-spread WiMax network. To complete this project, NMU worked with Intel, Lenovo, Motorola, and Cisco. This new wireless network marks the 10th anniversary of the NMU Notebook Initiative which was put in place to make sure that every NMU student was issued a laptop. Now they don’t only get issued a laptop, but have access to a city-wide WiMax network allowing them to connect on campus, as well as off.
