If you are in Black Hawk County, Iowa you now have another option for contacting 911. You can now text message in a requests for fire, police, ambulance, and other emergency services to the 911 call center.
This is a first in the United States and also a great technological leap for people with hearing disabilities who currently have had to rely on TDD. A downside to this service is that the 911 operators are unable to get the location from a text message meaning that callers must send their city or zip code in for the request to be properly routed.
According to an article on Engadget, “Currently, only iWireless subscribers (a local carrier affiliated with T-Mobile) can use the service, but plans are afoot to bring other carriers on board as well. Other future upgrades include the ability to accept video and picture messages.”
