Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode, or AM-OLED, is an emerging display technology that can create significant advantages for mobile devices because unlike Liquid Crystal Displays, or LCD, it doesn’t require a backlight and therefore, requires less energy, saving batter life.
According to an article on Reuters, Sprint Nextel is planning to start selling phones featuring this technology that are made by Samsung who has been pushing this new technology for use in cellphones. In addition to saving batter life, AM-OLED is also supposed to be capable of showing colors much more clearly. Unfortuantely, due to the fact that the technology is still new and the cost of manufaturing is still higher, Sprint only plans to initially release it’s higher-end phone with AM-OLED screens.
Although the Samsung Galaxy (pictured above), which uses AM-OLED technology, is available is some counties, currently, the Samsung Impression, which is sold by AT&T is the only AM-OLED phone sold in the US market. Consumers could see these phones becoming available next year.
