Netbooks have been making quite a surge lately due to their low cost and small size. Most netbooks retail anywhere from $100 to $400 dollars depending on screen size, etc. Ok, so what is this about $1?
According to an article posted on CNET, Sprint and Best Buy have teamed up to sell the Compaq Mini 110c-1040DX Netbook for 99 cents with a two-year mobile broadband service contract.
According to the Best Buy website, the netbook retails for $389.99. The Compaq Mini 110c-1040DX features the Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 1GB DDR2 memory, 10.1″ antiglare widescreen LED display, 16GB solid state drive, integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with 128MB of memory built-in webcam, 5-in-1 card reader, built-in wireless LAN (802.11b/g), 3 hour battery, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, and more. Oh yeah, and built-in Mobile Broadband (WWAN) which of course requires a separately purchased service contract, which in this case, is from Sprint.
Sprint offers its 3G Mobile Broadband Connection Plan for $60 per month for 5GB of data monthly. All-in-all, this $1 netbook and a two-year service contract would come out to a total of $1,441 over the course of the two years.
Best Buy also has plans to sell the same netbook for Verizon Wireless and AT&T, but with a $199.99 price tag along with the two-year contract. Verizon offers two levels of services starting at $40 per month for 250MB of data monthly and also $60 per month for 5GB of data monthly. AT&T also has a tiered pricing structure offering $40 per month for 200MB of data monthly, and $60 per month for the standard 5GB of monthly data. AT&T customers will also get free access to AT&T’s 20,000 nationwide WiFi hot spots. In addition to the Compaq Mini, AT&T announced in April 2009 that they were going to offer other netbooks such as the Acer Aspire One, Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and Mini 12, and LG Xenia, with prices ranging from $50 to $250.
