This years annual release of Eclipse, named “Galileo” is now available for download from the Eclipse website. The latest realase of the Eclipse IDE includes 33 projects this year including IDE’s for Java, C/C++, and PHP developers to name a few.
The Eclipse IDE can be downloaded for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux 32bit/64bit installations and downloads (depending on the package you choose) range from just under 100MB to over 300MB.
The installation of Eclipse has remained the same and as easy as ever. Just download the archive, extract it, and run Eclipse! The interface hasn’t changed at all, which in my opinion is a good thing.
I have been using Eclipse as a PHP IDE and also for Coldfusion and Fusebox (using CFEclipse) for about a year now and really like the way it works. I absolutely love the tasks portion and being able to put reminders in-line with my code. I did check and CFEclipse is ready for Galileo which is good because last year when Ganymede was released it was recommended that users wanting a stable environment stick with Europa.
Overall, my experiences with the Eclipse IDE have been very good and I would strongly recommend it to anyone how hasn’t tried it out. Best part is, it’s Free!
If you use Eclipse, you can become a Friend of Eclipse with a donation of $35 and help support the development efforts.
