Call of Duty is a major gaming franchise that raises the bar every time they release a game; with the exception of Call of Duty 3. Call of Duty 3 is a waste of time and money, the game play is nowhere near as good as its predecessors. The replay value for Call of Duty 3 is nonexistent, the online isn’t really great either, and for those of us who have beaten it on Veteran were pissed at the waste of their life (especially when you beat it on Veteran and do not get the achievement for it!!!). But that’s enough about Pewee’s lovechild I am here to give a review of World at War.
World at War is hands down the best World War II game in the never ending market. At first I was skeptical to buy it because of Call of Duty 3 and I was tired of all the World War II games. Although after doing some research and finding out that is uses Call of Duty 4’s engine with added features such as new WWII weapons like the flamethrower, bouncing Betties, tanks, and more I decided I would get it. Since that day I have not been let down because they did a great job Treyarch made a definite comeback from Call of Duty 3. They completely switched gears and gave their game a shot of steroids. This game is a lot of fun to play and keeps you wanting more. The online is just as good as Modern Warfare’s only with a lot more maps, and updates to add to the fun. This game has set records in the number of map packs downloaded there are currently two available with the promise of two more by November each has been 800 Microsoft points. This game also has the new option of playing Co-Op throughout the story mode with up to four people. This is a first for the Call of Duty games and it adds another element of replay value.
Like killing the Nazi’s and Imperial Army? How about killing endless waves of them in the bonus game Nazi Zombies, which is probably the sweetest thing since the invention of doughnuts. Nazi Zombies is an endless game where you defend a building from waves of Zombies until you die. You can unlock other parts of the building by using points from killing zombies, as well as buy different guns and equipment. This game has many hours of play and is fun to play with friends online, offline, or by yourself. Even though it is a four player game you can only play with two people on one Xbox. That is the one thing that I think Call of Duty should really do is make it so system link can have multiple people per Xbox instead of just one person per Xbox. I mean even the first shooting game for the Xbox Perfect Dark was able to.
Over all this game is a lot of fun to play by yourself or with friends. The single player is a lot of fun, despite the endless amount of grenades the enemies throw at you on Veteran. Veteran in this game is about equally as hard as Modern Warfare if not harder. There are challenges in single player and Co-Op that count for your online level as well, which is a nice addition being that the new level cap is 65.
There are a few downfalls of this game. The main one is that tanks are a rather annoying part of the online it makes team based games a pain sometimes. The graphics for this game are good but they are not as bright as Modern Warfare’s it is a bit more grimy and dark in some cases. Some of the perks are at an unreasonable level much like ‘Iron Lungs’ which now takes place at 60, which is kind of ridiculous seeing as there are quite a few guns that need this now as there are at least 6 or 7 snipers in this game. The extra ten levels for prestige is another pain because the last 10 levels are around 5,000 points each taking a longer time to level. But over all this game does not have very many flaws and I would recommend you to add it to your collection if you love Call of Duty or good shooting games.
